Background of the Study
In many developing countries, government subsidies play a crucial role in making education more accessible and affordable, particularly in public secondary schools. In Nigeria, public secondary schools are often subsidized by the government to reduce the financial burden on parents and guardians. This subsidy helps to make education affordable to a larger population, especially in the face of rising living costs. However, the effectiveness of these subsidies in reducing tuition fees and improving educational access remains a topic of significant debate (Ogunlade & Adeyemo, 2024).
In Oyo State, as in many other parts of Nigeria, the government has allocated substantial funds for the subsidization of tuition fees in public secondary schools. However, there are concerns regarding the extent to which these subsidies are effectively passed on to the students, and whether they contribute to improving educational outcomes. Some reports suggest that while subsidies are provided, the actual reduction in tuition fees does not always reach the intended beneficiaries due to inefficiencies in distribution or corruption within the education system (Nwachukwu, 2023). Additionally, the effectiveness of these subsidies in improving educational access and the overall quality of education in public secondary schools in Oyo State remains largely unexplored.
This study aims to evaluate the impact of government subsidies on tuition fees in public secondary schools in Oyo State, with a focus on assessing whether these subsidies have been successful in lowering tuition fees and improving educational access for students.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the allocation of government subsidies for public secondary schools in Oyo State, the actual reduction in tuition fees and improvements in educational access remain unclear. Some students continue to face financial challenges in accessing education, while others question the transparency and efficiency of the subsidy program. This study seeks to investigate the effectiveness of government subsidies in reducing tuition fees and improving the overall accessibility and quality of education in public secondary schools in Oyo State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on public secondary schools in Oyo State, examining the impact of government subsidies on tuition fees and educational access. Data will be collected from school administrators, students, and government education officers. The study will be limited by challenges in accessing sensitive financial information and the variation in subsidy distribution across different schools.
